Year-Round Family Fun At Nearby 49° North Mountain Resort

When you choose to stay at Waitts Lake RV Resort, you’re getting more than just easy access to the lake. Only a half-hour drive away is the popular 49° North Mountain Resort which offers a wide variety of activities year-round.

Located in the Colville National Forest, the resort came in fifth for best small ski area in the United States by On The Snow.

Whether you’ll be visiting in winter or summer, you’re bound to find something the whole family will enjoy. Here’s just a sampling of the different seasonal activities to try at 49° North.

Winter Sports

Plan on sticking around for the full ski season? Book one of our seasonal cabin rentals for convenient access to the mountain while avoiding the busy crowds.

When you’re not enjoying the lake views from your patio deck, you can spend your days skiing or snowboarding the hundreds of acres of skiable terrain at 49° North.

The winter season generally runs from November to April, but spring skiing can extend well into June and July if you’re lucky. Brush up on your technique with lessons from the Nordic Center, or gather some friends together for an evening of night skiing.

Summer Mountain Biking

If mountain biking is more your jam, you’re in luck; the resort’s East, West, and Central Basins offer many service roads that are ideal for mountain biking. Take in the scenic views from Chewelah Mountain as you hit the trails.

Just be aware that the lifts aren’t in operation during the summer season, so you’ll need to hike in with your bike to your desired trail. It’s also worth noting that there are no set non-motorized trails.

Huckleberry Picking

Picking huckleberries on the mountain is a well-kept secret among locals, and for good reason! You’ll find ample opportunities for huckleberry hunting on Chewelah Peak.

The best time to go is usually from July to early August. You can pick up to 3 gallons of berries per day, and the size of the berries will differ depending on the location and season. This is a warm weather activity that the kids are sure to love.

Summer Hiking

Once the snow’s gone, you can still take advantage of the ski runs by hiking up to the top of Chewelah Peak. Choose from steep grades for more of a challenge, or a moderate trail for leisurely exercise.

Bring a picnic to enjoy once you’ve reached the top, and admire the stunning views of the Colville National Forest that surrounds you. Both the Nordic trails and service roads are also available for hiking in the summer.
